If you drop two rolls of toilet paper, while holding onto the
end of one roll
(meaning, one unrolls as it falls, the other drops straight
down), they will land
at the same time if the initial heights have a specific ratio.
Each roll has an
inner diameter of 3.5cm and an outer diameter of 11cm.
1. For the roll that you hold onto the end of (the one that
unrolls), how fast
would it hit the ground if you dropped it from a height of
2.0m?
2. How long would it take to hit the ground? (the acceleration
is not g).
3. How high would you have to drop the other roll (the one
that falls straight
down), such that it would take the same amount of time as you
found in
part 2?
4. Try it yourself (or with a friend). Did your calculation
match your exper-
iment? Explain.
