Astronomers cannot map all of the material in our galaxy using visible light.

a) Why is it that they cannot use visible light?

b) Which regions of the EM spectrum are used to map the galaxy?

Answer #1
  • The main reason we don't see the bright center of our galaxy, which is composed of millions of stars, is dust. Visible light is absorbed and scattered by interstellar dust, but that doesn't mean we can't see it on other waves of the spectrum, for example, infrared light doesn't suffer as much because of the dust
  • Radio waves and microwaves – the longest wavelengths and lowest energies of light – are used to peer inside dense interstellar clouds and track the motion of cold, dark gas. Radio telescopes have been used to map the structure of our galaxy while microwave telescopes are sensitive to the remnant glow of the Big Bang

For astronomy class, please answer this question clearly, thank you Io, Europa, and Titan are all moons of Jovian planets that are known or suspected to be geologically active. They are too small to have significant radioactive heating in their cores like large terrestrials planets (e.g. Earth or Venus). Discuss the sort of heating that astronomers believe is responsible for the heating on these large moons. Why is this heating of great interest particularly for Europa?

I need a knowledgable person in astronomy, who can answer the following questions. Stellar nurseries are massive regions of star formation much like the region in which our own star formed. Once these baby stars form they eventually get gravitationally ejected from the region and move into interstellar space. Stars are formed in bundles in this regard and our Sun likely has numerous brothers and sisters that formed from the same cloud as ours. They are out there independently revolving...

Please use text to type out the answer, no pictures please thank you. The equation E=hf describes the energy of each photon in a beam of light. If Planck’s constant, h, were larger, would photons of light of the same frequency be more energetic or less energetic. Be sure to explain using at least 3 content related sentences.
