Jack has a VO2 of 52 mL/kg/min. You decide on a training intensity of 75% VO2max. What is the running speed (assume 0% grade)?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

VO2max is maximum volume of oxygen that our body can process while doing exercise

for running, the metabolism equivalent is around 3.5 mL / kg / min

so,

75 % means

0.75 * ( 52 mL /kg/min - 3.5 mL / kg / min) + 3.5 mL / kg / min

39.875 mL / kg / min

for running, the standard equation is

VO2 = 0.2 * speed + 0.9 * grade + 3.5

39.875 mL / kg / min = x m / min + 0.2 mL / kg/min + 3.5

36.375/ 0.2 = x m / min

x = 181.875 m/min

we probably want this speed in mph

so,

x = 6.78 mph

Your client is a local distance runner who recently had her VO2max tested at 61.4 ml/kg/min. Today she is going to run at 70% VO2reserve. If she runs on the treadmill at 6 mph, at what grade would you set it so she achieves her target VO2? What if she wants to ride the stationary bike today, instead? How many watts? She weighs 128 lbs.
