What causes the phases of the moon? Consider the model of the solar system while writing your answer.
Like Earth which revolves around the Sun, Moon revolves around the Earth and it is this motion which makes it appear as if it is changing shapes. The phases of Moon are produced due to the alignment of the Moon and the Sun in the sky. As the Moon moves, a portion of its face is directly facing the Sun and it is this portion which appears to be lit on Earth. The dark portion means that the other portion is behind the Sun with respect to the Earth and so the reflected light cannot reach the Earth.
