Standing still on a skateboard, you catch a ball tossed horizontally to you. The mass of the ball is one-tenth your mass. Compare with the speed of the caught ball, the speed that both you and the caught ball acquire is about

A) The same 1/100 as much

B) 1/100 as much

C)1/10 as much

D) 10 times as much

E) 100 times as much

I Know the answer is (c) 1/10th as much but will you explain why.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Let the mass of the ball be m and let the speed of the ball be v

Therefore initial momentum = mv

When the ball is caught the mass at that time is m +10m (as the mass of skater is 10 times the ball) = 11m. Let the speed after catching be v'

By law of conservation of momentum

Therefore the the speed after catching is 1/11th of the speed of ball. Close enough is 1/10th of ball.

So answer is Option C) 1/10th

Imagine you are standing on a skateboard, initially motionless. You throw a medicine ball horizontally while on the skateboard and as a result you roll backward. 1. Model this situation by creating a complete momentum chart with the initial momentum at a time just before you throw the ball and the final momentum at a time just after letting go. 2. Consider the same scenario but use an interval with the final state chosen after the motion of the throw,...

A person standing at the edge of a cliff throws one ball straight up and another ball straight down at the same initial speed. Neglecting air resistance, the ball to hit the ground below the cliff with the greater speed is the one initially thrown 1. Upward 2.Downward 3.Neither—they both hit at the same speed I know the answer is 3. But I dont know how to prove it. Plz help with it.

A student is standing still at the front doors of Maple. They start running to catch the bus at 2 ft/ s . Their maximum running speed is 7ft/s. (a) How far away is the bus stop if they reach the bus stop after accelerating from standing still until reaching maximum speed and running at that speed for 1 minute? (assume when they reach the bus stop they are at rest.) (b) Suppose that the student gets to the bus...

While he is in mid air, a cliff diver throws a 0.2kg mass ball horizontally with respect to himself with a speed of 10m/s in the positive direction. At the instant he threw the ball his downward speed as would be measured by someone standing on the cliff was 10 m/s. Define the vertical and horizontal positions of the ball with respect to the diver as 0 at the instant the diver released the ball. Ignore air resistance for this...

A person with mass mp=80 kg is standing at rest on a horizontal, frictionless surface holding a ball of wet clay with mass mg=10 kg . In front of the person is a large block with mass M=20 kg at rest next to a spring with stiffness k=100 N/m . The person throws the ball horizontally, it sticks to the block, and then ball and block slide and compress the spring a distance 1=0.75 m away from equilibrium before the...

1. A rubber ball with a mass of 1.35 kg is stuck in a tree. To knock it out, you throw a golf ball with a mass of 0.0450 kg at it. The golf ball hits the rubber ball with a speed of 20.0 m/s and bounces off with a speed of 10.0 m/s. The golf ball is moving in the same direction horizontally after the collision as it was before it hit the rubber ball. When the golf ball...
