if a beam of white light falls on a concave reflecting surface, the red portion of the light is:

1) closer to mirror than blue portion
2) further to mirror than blue portion
3) at same point as blue

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A concave reflecting surface is the one which is polished from outside. It is also known as converging mirror. It converges the parallel beam of light on a single point termed as focus of the lens.

White light is made up to seven colors which are VIBGYOR ( starting from voilet to the red)

When white light falls on a concave mirror. It tend to converge all the wavelength at focus point.

Therefore, the red portion of light is same as blue ( position) ( Answer)

Whereas, if it was a plane mirror instead of concave mirror. The law of reflection will make the colours split even after reflection.

A collimated beam of white light falls at normal incidence on a plate of glass of index n and thickness d. Develop a formula for the transmittance as a function of wavelength. Show that maxima occur at those wavelengths such that where λN, is the vacuum wavelength and N is an integer. The transmission function is thus periodic (in wavenumber or frequency) and is called a “channeled spectrum.”
