A race car is traveling towards you and you hear a sound of frequency 4072 Hz while the car is traveling towards you. Then the car shoots by you and as the car is traveling away from you, you hear a frequency of 2774 Hz. A car horn produces a sound with a frequency of 408 Hz. The horn is sounded while the car is moving down the street in the same direction as a bicycle which is ahead of the car. The bicyclist is moving down the street with 1/5.46 the speed of the car and hears a frequency of 436 Hertz. Determine the speed of the car (in m/s). The speed of the sound is 345 m/s.

The frequency will sound different if we hear a sound source moving relative to us. This phenomenon is called the Doppler Effect in Physics. An ambulance sounds a siren at 1515 Hz and passes a cyclist moving at 2.12 m / s. After the ambulance passed, the cyclist heard a siren sound at a frequency of 1501 Hz. The speed of sound in the air is about 343 m / s. What is the speed (speed) of the ambulance in...
