How is the excitation energy affects the KE of Auger electrons and how in XPS?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The excited ion can also relax through emission of a secondary electron, called an Auger electron, to form a doubly ionized atom. ... The kinetic energy of an Auger electron does not depend on the energy of the ionizing photon or electron, whereas that of the XPS electron does in other hand

In XPS spectrum, X axis represent Bind Energy of the elements we test. It is derived from BE=hv-Ek (Ek is kinetic energy of excited photoelectrons, and Ek is detected by XPS machine). It means all the values in X axis are derived from above equation. So why the Auger peaks in XPS spectrum represent the kinetic energy of Auger electrons.

For example, in XPS spectrum of Ag, there is a peak at 368eV which belongs to BE of Ag3d.Besides, there is also a peak at 351eV which belongs to kinetic energy of AgMNN. So why one represents BE but the other one represents KE in the same X axis

In this lab you measured the kinetic energy of a car (KE, in Joules) at several velocities (m/s). At the beginning of the lab the car was at rest (v = 0 m/s) and had no kinetic energy. At v = 1.0 m/s, the car had KE = 5.1 J. At v = 2.0 m/s, the car had KE = 19.6 J. At v = 3.0 m/s, the car had KE = 45.1 J. Finally, at v = 4.0 m/s,...
