n Lab 8 we investigated two types of collisions, elastic and inelastic. Assuming an inelastic collision, cart 1 with inertia of M and velocity V collides with a stationary cart 2 with inertia of M and they stick together what is the final velocity of the two carts?
V |
||
4V |
||
V/2 |
||
2V |
Mass of cart 1 is=M
Initial Velocity of cart 1,v1=V
Mass of cart 2 is=M
Initial Velocity of cart 2,v2=0
Let final velocity of the two carts when they stick together is vf
Total linear momentum of system before collision=Mv1+Mv2
Total linear momentum of system after collision=(M+M)vf=2Mvf
According to principal of conservation of linear momentum
Total linear momentum of system before collision=Total linear momentum of system after collision
or
Mv1+Mv2=2Mvf
MV+M(0)=2Mvf
So
vf=V/2
