A cannonball of mass 25.1 kg is shot into the air at an angle of 45 degrees with respect to horizontal. At the top of its ballistic trajectory, the cannonball suddenly explodes into two separate pieces, a smaller piece this is 1/3 the original mass, and a larger piece that is 2/3 the original mass. The smaller piece ends up landing right back at the spot where the cannonball was originally launched, 29.8 seconds after it was launched. How far from the launch site does the larger piece travel? You can neglect the effects of air resistance. (Hint: you'll want to go back and review ballistic motion equations).

A 3 kg cannonball is shot straight up from ground level at a velocity of 30 m/s. For the following questions, neglect air resistance and assume acceleration due to gravity is -10 m/s2. (a) Use the 1D equations of motion to find: i. The maximum height the cannonball reaches ii. The time it takes to reach this height iii. The time it takes to fall back to the ground iv. The speed with which it hits the ground

Suppose a 11.0 kg fireworks shell is shot into the air with an initial velocity of 68.0 m/s at an angle of 80.0° above the horizontal. At the highest point of its trajectory, a small explosive charge separates it into two pieces, neither of which ignite (two duds). One 9.00 kg piece falls straight down, having zero velocity just after the explosion. Neglect air resistance (a poor approximation, but do it anyway). (a) At what horizontal distance (in m) from...

According to sources that should know these things, a piece of an object hit by a projectile can move toward the launch site rather than away from the launch site. A projectile is launched, strikes a target, the target splits into two pieces and one piece (allegedly) under certain circumstances moves back toward the launch site. Does this make sense? Rather than argue about common sense and how the world is supposed to work, an experiment is conducted. In one...

A projectile of mass 2.0 kg is fired in the air at an angle of 43.0° to the horizon at a speed of 44.0 m/s. At the highest point in its flight, the projectile breaks into three parts of mass 1.0 kg, 0.7 kg, and 0.3 kg. The 1.0 kg part falls straight down after breakup with an initial speed of 14.8 m/s, the 0.7 kg part moves in the original forward direction, and the 0.3 kg part goes straight...
