2. Ethyl chloride is produced from HCl and ethyl alcohol using the reaction
HCl + C2H5OHC2H5Cl + H2O.
Pure HCl gas is available. The ethanol is available as a 90% (wt based) solution in water and must be vaporized. The reaction does not go to completion. The reactor effluent is sent to a purification unit which separates feed into a product containing 87%C2H5Cl, 12%C2H5OH, and 1% H2O and a spent acid stream containing 78% HCl and 22% water. Using a basis of 1000 kg product/hr, determine i) the reactor effluent composition, ii) the limiting reactant, and iii) the fractional conversion of the limiting reactant.

Ethanol is produced commercially by hydration of ethylene and during this process a side reaction converts some the ethanol to diethyl ether (DEE). In one process, a fresh feed containing ethylene, non-condensable inerts, and water are mixed with a recycle stream. The combined stream is fed to the reactor and it contains 182 mol/min of ethylene. While the fresh feed contains 9 moles of ethylene per mole of inerts, after mixing with recycle stream, the mole ratio of inerts to...

Benzaldehyde is produced from toluene in the catalytic reaction C6H5CH3 + O2 ? C6H5CHO + H2O Dry air and toluene vapor are mixed and fed to the reactor at 350.0°F and 1 atm. Air is supplied in 100.0% excess. Of the toluene fed to the reactor, 13.0% reacts to form benzaldehyde and 0.100% reacts with oxygen to form CO2 and H2O. The product gases leave the reactor at 379°F and 1 atm. Water is circulated through a jacket surrounding the...

Oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane is the conversion of ethane with oxygen to yield ethylene and water. It is a cleaner and more efficient alternative to the widely used steam cracking process for ethylene production from ethane. a. Acetic acid bacteria of the genus Acetobacter are used to made acetic acid, in the form of vinegar. Given sufficient oxygen, these bacteria can produce vinegar from a variety of alcoholic foodstuffs. Commonly used feeds include apple cider, wine, and fermented grain, malt, rice, or potato mashes. The overall chemical reaction facilitated by these bacteria is:             C2H5OH + O2 → CH3COOH + H2O One of the first modern commercial processes was the "German method", first practised in Germany in...
