sketch label and describe of an agitated vessel include the impeller and suggest suitable impeller for a high-viscosity liquid

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The main parts of Agitated vessel includes Motor, Feed hopper, Cooling jacket, Agitator(impeller), Baffles etc... We will see each of them in brief.

I. Motor

Motor is a mechanical device which is driven by power source. Which is connected to agitator or impeller shaft and which furthur rotates the agitator.

II. Feed hopper

It is used to introduce the feed or to through the feed in the agitation vessel. Usually it connected through a check valve. Check valve allows feed in one direction only, so feed will not come back.

III. Cooling or Heating jacket

For endothermic or Exothermic reactions either the heat should be removed or supplied to the batch agitator. So, for this purpose this jacket serves as either heating or cooling medium. Hot fluid or cold fluid will be introduced in certain velocity, which reduces the temperature or increases the batch agitation vessel.

IV. Baffles

Baffles are used to reduce the swirling in the agitator, so there is uniform mixing takes place in the reaction vessel. If baffles are not installed then there may be some chance that materials which may stick to vessel and will not participate in the reactions.

V. Agitator

Which agitates the raction mixture, so that raction will takes place in a uniform way and all reactant molecules are exposed to each of them.

High-Viscosity liquids

For high-viscosity liquids either double-helix impeller or paddle type impeller will be most suitable. But one of the disadvantage is that it consumes more power because of their weight and construction.
