Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution: -

i. A section of a river between two bridges- Continuous process

Explanation- As water in the river is continuously flowing, so section of river between any two points is considered as a continuous process since there is continuous inflow and outflow of the material (water).

ii. A home water heater- Continuous process

Explanation- In a home water heater, the water is admitted and flowing through the tube in the water heater as the tap is opened towards the outlet and while flow it will absorb necessary heat.

iii. A reaction carried out in a beaker- Batch or Semi- batch process

Explanation- In a beaker, we can carry out a chemical reaction batch wise by adding all the reactant initially in to the beaker, providing sufficient time for reaction under constant stirring and removing all the contents in the beaker after completion of reaction.

The reaction can also be carried out semi- batch wise by adding one reactant initially in to the beaker while the other reactant is added slowly. After addition of second reactant is over, provide sufficient time for reaction under constant stirring and remove all the contents in the beaker after completion of reaction.

iv. Preparing a pot of chili- Semi- batch process

Explanation- This is a semi- batch process, since the ingredients are added slowly and step by step but final product is withdrawn once process gets completed.

v. Water boiling in a pot on the stove- Batch process

Explanation- The water is taken initially on the pot and this pot is then placed on the stove. Due to heat from burning of fuel in the stove, the temperature of water in a pot increases and it will boil at the boiling point.
