Separation of Acetone and Ethanol

A distillation column with a total condenser and partial reboiler is separating acetone and ethanol (equilibrium data is provided in the table below). The feed is 70 mole% acetone, flows at 1000 mol/h, and is a superheated vapor for which one mole of liquid must be vaporized on the feed plate to cool four moles of feed. We desire a bottoms composition of 5 mole% acetone and a distillate composition of 90 mole% acetone. The column operates at 1 atm. The equilibrium data is given in the table below. Answer the following questions.

a) What is the minimum number of stages needed for this separation (i.e. total reflux)?

b) What is the minimum reflux ratio?

c) If R = 2Rmin, find the optimal feed stage and the number of stages if the column efficiency is 75%.

A distillation column with a total condenser is separating acetone from ethanol. A distillate concentration of xD = 0.90 mole fraction acetone is desired. Since CMO is valid, L/V = constant. If L/V is equal to 0.8. The distillation column has a partial reboiler that acts as an equilibrium contact. If the bottoms composition is xB = 0.13 mole fraction acetone and the boilup ratio V/B= 1.0, find the vapor composition leaving the second stage above the partial reboiler. a)...

A continuous, steady-state distillation column with a total condenser and a partial reboiler is separating methanol from water at one atmosphere. The feed rate is 100 kg mole per hour. The feed is 55 mole % methanol and 45 mole % water. We desire a distillate product that is 90 mole % methanol and a bottoms product that is 5 mole % methanol. Assume CMO. a- Obtain and use the vapor liquid equilibrium data for methanol –water form any available...

Q1) Methanol (50 %) and water (50 %) mixture is fed into a distillation column. The feed flowrate is 500 kmole/hr. 50 % of feed is vaporized. The column is well insulated and has a total condenser. A reflux is set to 2 and returned to column as saturated liquid. The compositions in the distillate and bottom are to be 95 % and 5 %, respectively. The column is at 1 atm. Instead of a reboiler, saturated steam is directly...

Q2) Consider 100 kmole/h of feed which includes 20 mole % ethanol in water. We wish to concentrate ethanol to 60 % with a bottom product that is no more than 2 % ethanol. The feed is a saturated liquid. The reflux ratio should be 1.5*Rmin (Rmin: Minimum reflux ratio). If the trays have a Murphree efficiency of 75 % based on the vapor, calculate the number of stages and optimal feed stage. The column is run at 1 atm....
