Separation of Acetone and Ethanol

A distillation column with a total condenser and partial reboiler is separating acetone and ethanol (equilibrium data is provided in the table below). The feed is 70 mole% acetone, flows at 1000 mol/h, and is a superheated vapor for which one mole of liquid must be vaporized on the feed plate to cool four moles of feed. We desire a bottoms composition of 5 mole% acetone and a distillate composition of 90 mole% acetone. The column operates at 1 atm. The equilibrium data is given in the table below. Answer the following questions.

a) What is the minimum number of stages needed for this separation (i.e. total reflux)?

b) What is the minimum reflux ratio?

c) If R = 2Rmin, find the optimal feed stage and the number of stages if the column efficiency is 75%.

The feed rate is 1000 kmol/h, and feed is a saturated vapour. We desire a distillate product of 99 mol% ethanol and a bottoms product that is 0.8 mol% ethanol. Reflux is saturated liquid and CMO can be used. Equilibrium data can be approximated with an average relative volatility of 2.1 (ethanol is more...

It is desired to design a distillation column to separate Methanol and Ethanol. One must obtain 100 kmol / hr of distillate with a mol concentration of 0.95 from a liquid stream saturated with 35 mol% of methanol. For this purpose, there will be a Reboiler and a total capacitor that can eliminate 12000 Kcal / h (λ = 40Kcal / Kmol), and allows a return flow of saturated reflux to the tower. A distillation column has a feed of 100 kmol/h. The feed is 15 mol% heavy non-key, 35 mol% heavy key, and 50 mol% light key. The reflux ratio is 1.4 times the minimum. It is desired to have 99% recovery of the light key in the distillate. The mole fraction of light key in the distillate should be 0.85.
