Because of its high sensitivity, it is proposed to use an electroncapture detector with a chromatograph column. What special precautions would have to be taken?
ELECTRON CAPTURE DETECTOR GENERALLY USES Ni-63 AS ELECTRON EMITTOR. Ni-63 IS A RADIOACTIVE ELEMENT. THEREFORE WHILE USING ECD FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS NEED TO BE TAKEN:
1. RADIOACTIVITY LEAK TEST IS PERFORMED AT REGULAR INTERVALS GENERALLY 6 MONTHS TO ENSURE INTEGRITY OF ECD. IF RADIOACTIVE LEAK TEST INDICATES LEAKAGE (GENERALLY OF VALUE GREATER THAN 0.005 MICROCURIE), THEN USE OF ECD MUST BE STOPPED.
2. WHWENEVER ECD IS NOT IN OOPERATION, BLIND ALL OPEN CONNECTIONS OF ECD.
3. WHILE USING ECD, VENT OF ECD MUST BE OPENED & MUST ALWAYS BE CONNECTED TO OUTSIDE.
