Ethylene is a highly flammable gas with autoignition temperature 4900C. At temperature higher than this ethylene combusts in normal atmosphere without any heat source. When ethylene is compressed, there may be possibility of temperature reaching in excess of 4900C.If air is also compressed with ethylene and temperature reaches 4900C, then mixture shall become combustible & explosion shall occur which may damage the compressor and other inter connecting equipment. Therefore it is advisable to compress both streams separately.
