What are the components of pressure drop under cyclone operation? [3 marks]

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The pressure drop over the cyclone is caused by area changes, wall friction, change of flow direction and the dissipation in the vortex finder. Because of these effects, the pressure drop mainly composed of following parts.

delta P1 - entry pressure loss at the tangential inlet duct

delta P2 - the frictional loss along the total spiral distance in the outer vertex, causee by the wall friction.

delta P3 - the pressure caused the change of air flow direction from outer vertex to inner vertex.

detla P4 - the entry pressure loss from the point that the air enters the inner vertex to the point that air leaves the outlet tube

Molten polystyrene flows through a circular tube at 210 oC under the pressure drop of 500 psi. Given the inside diameter of the tube is 0.25 in. and the tube is 3 in. in length, calculate the volumetric flow rate Q in cm3/s. Assume the viscosity of the melt is 10,000 Poise. [ Poise = g/(cm.s); psi = lbf/(in2) ]. Hint: The melt flow inside the tube can be approximately treated as laminar flow with constant viscosity.
