Benzene and Toluene are in a solution at equilibrium with the following conditions: T=25oC and XB=.500. Calculate the composition of Benzene in the vapor phase

Answer #1

Vapour pressure of pure benzene and toluene are 95.1 and 28.4 mm Hg respectively

according to Raoult’s law

PA = PA0XA

PA = partial pressure of A

PA0 = vapour pressure of pure A

XA = mole fraction in liquid of component A

Total pressue P = PA + PB

if there is only two component in solution XA + XB = 1

XB = 1-XA

Ptotal = 95.91 mmHg x Xbenzene + 28.4 mmHg x (1-Xbenzene)

= 95.91 x 0.5 + 28.4 x (1-.5)

= 62.155 mm Hg

Ybenzene = Pbenzene/Ptotal

= 95.91 x 0.5 / 62.155 = 0.77 ans
