The peak obtained in a chormatogram is based on the retention time. The retention time is based on the interaction of the compound with the mobile phase and the stationary phase. Since both acetylsalicylic acid and caffeine have similar retention time, they move into the detector at the same time. The detector senses the presence of a compound and sends a signal for plotting the chromatogram. The width of the peak in a chromatogram corresponds to concentration. The peak in a chromatogram corresponds to retention time in the column.
