650 kg of juice containing 15% sugar and 85% non-sugar liquid is produced when 1000 kg of a certain fruit is fed in a juice extractor. The residue contains 70% pulp and small amount of juice in it. Calculate the weight of the residue and the percentage of unextracted sugar in it

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans :

The amount of sugar in juice = ( 650 x 15) / 100 = 97.5 kg

The weight of residue = weight of fruit - weight of juice

= 1000 kg - 650 kg

= 350 kg residue

This residue has 70% pulp , so the rest 30% is juice.

So the amount of juice in residue : ( 30 x 350) / 100 = 105 kg juice

Now the juice has 15 % sugar

So the amount of sugar here : ( 15 x 105) / 100 = 15.75 g of sugar

Total sugar = 97.5 kg + 15.75 kg = 113.25 kg

So percentage of unextracted sugar = ( 15.75 / 113.25) x 100

= 13.9 %
