The pressure drop increases with increase in gas velocity as shown in the figure. At moderate velocities, the gas flow impedes the downward flowing liquid and the liquid holdup in the tower increases. At a specific point called loading point, the liquid holdup increases and as the gas velocities increase further, the entire column is filled with liquid and the column in said to be flooded.
Indications of flooding: High pressure drop, very low or no mass transfer from gas to liquid and liquid becomes a continuous phase in the tower: causing poor performance of the tower.
