hyphochoride at 12% by mass is used to disinfect water, the flow rate of water is 260 m3/h the hyhpochroride dosing pump is at 20l/h

a) How long will it take to disinfect ?

b) how much chorine should be in drinking water after this time ?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Part a

Hypochloride is used in potable water for disinfection at 12% by mass.

Mass flow rate of water = volumetric flow rate x density

= 260 m3/h x 1000 kg/m3

= 260000 kg/h

Dosing rate of Hypochloride = 260000 kg/h x 0.12

= 31200 kg/h

Volume of Hypochloride required = mass/density

= 31200 kg / (1110kg/m3)

= 28.11 m3

Time will take to disinfect

= 28.11 m3 / (20 L/h x 1m3/1000L)

= 1405.5 hr x 1day/24hr

= 58.56 days or 59 days

Part b

% chlorine in hypochloride = 47.69%

Chlorine in drinking water = 31200 x 0.4769

= 14879.28 kg

The drinking water treatment plant is typically upgraded in terms of both water quantity (flow rate) and quality (conversion). At present, 90% of a contaminant A is degraded by a first-order reaction in a single CSTR treating source water. We plan to add an identical reactor having the same volume to the existing one in series in order to improve the performance of current treatment plant. (a) For the same flow rate as presently used, how will this addition affect...

Calculate the mass flow rate of heating medium (water) required in pasteurization of 1000 kg/h milk from 45°C to 72°C. Water enters heat exchanger at 90°C and leaves at 75°C. Heat loss from the exchanger to the ambience is estimated at 1 kJ/s. Take heat capacities of water and milk as 4.2 and 3.9 kJ/kg°C, respectively.

A pump is used to deliver water from a large reservoir to another large reservoir that is 20 m higher. The inlet of the pipe is submerged in the one reservoir and the exit is just above the surface of the other reservoir. If the friction head loss in the 200-mm-diameter, 4-km-long pipeline is 2.5 m for every 500 m of pipe length, determine the required power output of the pump so the flow is 0.6 m3/s.
