There are the techniques of “Top down” and “Bottom up” to fabricate nanomaterials. Explain advantages and disadvantages of each technique.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Bottom up approach

Advantages:-

1)Smaller structures can be bulid when compared to top-down

2)Bottom-up approach is better than top-down approach in nano fabrication.

3)Bottom-up approach are good in producing nanostructures with less defects and more homogenous chemical composition.

4)Better for large scale production than Top down approach

Disadvantage :- .

1)Fewer tools to manipulate molecules and atoms

2)Require compatible surfaces, molecules

Top Down Approach:-

Advantages:-

1) Dominant in micro fabrication

2)The main advantages of top-down approach are the cost and controlled shape and size of the product.

Disadvantages:-

1)Limited for nano fabrication

2)Limitation comes from wavelength of light or tool

3)Slow and not suitable for large scale production

Process is slow and may not be economical for very large production scale
