Q1.

Why KLa of a bubble column reactor is more than that of airlift bioreactor?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The gas and liquid phases show virtual plug flow behaviour within the riser of an airlift. This is in contrast with bubble columns where both gas and liquid phases deviate strongly from plug flow. When compared at the same superficial gas velocity, the liquid circulation is much stronger in airlifts than in bubble columns. This leads to a much lower gas holdup in airlifts. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient  , in airlifts is considerably lower than in bubble columns as a consequence of significantly lower gas holdup.

Ammonia gas enters a reactor with 30% more dry air (no water vapor) than is required for complete conversion (4NH3 + 5O2 --> 4NO + 6H2O). These gases enter the reactor at 75c and exit at 600c. How much heat is required per mole of ammonia fed?

Why does basicity increase up a column while nucleophilicty decreases down a column? Electron density increases up a column, so shouldn't basicity decrease since the species is less prone to donate electrons? I can see why this makes sense for a Bronston-Lowry definition since greater electronegativity means that the base will attract the H+ more rapidly.
