Q1.
Why KLa of a bubble column reactor is more than that of airlift bioreactor?
The gas and liquid phases show virtual plug flow behaviour within the riser of an airlift. This is in contrast with bubble columns where both gas and liquid phases deviate strongly from plug flow. When compared at the same superficial gas velocity, the liquid circulation is much stronger in airlifts than in bubble columns. This leads to a much lower gas holdup in airlifts. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient , in airlifts is considerably lower than in bubble columns as a consequence of significantly lower gas holdup.
