A soluble gas is absorbed into water using a packed tower. The equilibrium relationship may be taken as y = 2x. The incoming vapor stream contains 1% of this soluble gas in air and 90% of the soluble gas must be removed from the air stream. Using a basis of 1 lb-mole/hr for the inlet vapor stream:

(a) Find the minimum water flowrate for this unit operation.

(b) Using a water flowrate 25% greater than the minimum, find the number of transfer units needed to meet specs. (solve this both analytically and graphically)

In a gas absorption tower, acetone is absorbed from its mixture with air using a nonvolatile absorption oil. 100 mol/h of gas mixture enter the bottom of the column contains 30 mol% acetone while 261.9 mol/h oil enter the top of the column. The exiting gas stream is to contain 1.3 mol% acetone. a) Determine molar flow rate of the exiting gas and exiting liquid streams. b) Determine number of stages required for the above process.

A production facility heats various equipment using a network of heated air and water vapor lines. A boiler produces a 195.0 mol/hr stream consisting of 0.590 mol fraction of water and 0.410 mol fraction of air at 131.0°C and 5200.0 mmHg. The air and water vapor cool as the gases move away from the boiler, and steam traps collect and remove condensed water from the lines while the pressure remains constant. a) If a total of 65.6 mol/hr of condensed...
