Question 1

You are assigned to carry out a preliminary design for a water treatment process. A pollutant of concern, denoted ‘A’, is known to degrade in water. But you do not know the rate law or reaction rate constant. You conduct a series of experiments. In each case, you established an initial concentration of 50 mg/L of pollutant ‘A’ in water in a sealed vessel. After a certain period, you open the vessel and measure the remaining concentration of ‘A’. The results of your experiment are tabulated below:

Experiment                  Duration of Experiment                                    Final Concentration (mg/L)

1                                  1 hour                                                  35

2                                  3 hours                                                 17

3                                  6 hours                                                 6

a) What is the rate constant?

b) You are to design a reactor to treat a constant flow rate of 0.3 m3/s of water containing 50 mg/L of ‘A’. If the reactor is configured as a complete mixed flow system, how large must it be to achieve 90% removal of ‘A’.

c) Size a plug-flow reactor in place of complete mixed flow reactor for the similar situation mentioned in (b).

d) If you would like to propose two complete mix reactors of equal volume in series what should be the volume of each reactor.

What is the effluent concentration of a reactive contaminant exiting a completely mixed flow reactor after 8 hours of operation? Assume that after this length of time, the reactor is at steady state. The volume of the reactor is 100 L and the volumetric flow rate is 50 L/hr. The influent concentration of the contaminant is 80 mg/L and the rate constant for the decay of the contaminant is 0.5 hr-1.

An activated sludge system has three square reactor tanks in series (CFSTRs) that are each 60 ft wide, 60 ft long, and 18 ft deep. The engineers have decided to add a new reactor in parallel. It will be a plug flow reactor (PFR) with a depth of 18 feet and a width of 18 feet. The length is to be calculated. The flowrate of wastewater is 2 MGD and the BOD is 165 mg/L. This will be split in...

A mine produces a wastewater discharge of 701 m^3/d containing 11,945 mg/L of total dissolved solids (TDS). This discharge is released into a freshwater stream with a flow of 16,867 m^3/d containing 222 mg/L TDS. The water discharge permit states that the water downstream from the discharge must not exceed a TDS concentration of 399 mg/L. The mine plans to use an ion exchange reactor to regulate the TDS. This technology removes TDS while allowing clean water to pass through,...

Suppose you are to design a chlorination tank for killing microorganisms in the effluent from a wastewater treatment plant. It is necessary to achieve 99.99% kill in a wastewater flow of 100 m3/hr. Assume the disinfection is a first-order reaction with a rate constant of 0.2 min−1. A) First, calculate the tank volume if the contact tank is a CMF reactor. B) Then, calculate the tank volume if the contact tank is a plug-flow reactor. C) Last, what is the...

Design a completely mixed activated sludge process using three different design approaches (i.e. calculate the volume of the aeration basin). Base your design for the first approach on detention time, for the second one on BOD loading, and the third one on kinetics. The influent design flow rate to the activated sludge process is 10,000 m3 /day with a BOD5 concentration of 200mg/L. Completely mixed activated sludge processes typically have a detention time ranging from 3 to 6 hours and...

The pollutant has a first-order reaction rate coefficient (decay) of 0.25 d-1. Assuming the pollutant is well-mixed in the lake. How long does it take the lake to reach the steady-state concentration? You may assume that if concentration is approximately 99%...
