What size of wind turbine blade would you need for 16.7 kW wind turbine with wind speeds of 32mph? Report your answer in feet. Assume 45% efficiency.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The formula for wind turbine power is,

Power(W)= (π/2)*(radius of blade)^2*(velocity of air)^3*(air density)*(efficiency factor)

considering air density to be 1.25 kg/m^3

32mph=14.3mps

putting the respective values

16700=(π/2)*(radius of blade)^2*(14.3)^2*(1.25)*(.45)

16700=1.571*(radius of blade)^2*204.49*(1.25)*(.45)

16700=(radius of blade)^2*180.70

16700/180.70=(radius of blade)^2

radius of blade= 9.61 m

Radius of blade should be 9.61 m to generate a power of 9.61 kW from the turbine

Should you generate electricity with your own personal wind turbine? That depends on whether you have the right amount of wind on your site. For a personal wind turbine to work properly, your site should have an annual average wind speed of at least 10 miles per hour, according to the Wind Energy Association. Lower winds do not provide enough energy. One candidate site was monitored last year, with wind speeds recorded every 8 hours. A total of 49 readings...

A model car is tested in a large wind tunnel at an airspeed of 200 km/h. The model is 0.8m long and is a geometrically similar ¼ scale model of the full-size prototype car. If a drag force of 1.2kN is measured on the model in the wind tunnel, estimate the power the full-size car would require to overcome the drag force when travelling at a speed of 50km/h How would you describe the flow? Are similarity conditions met? Explain....

Suppose you own some land next to a 50 MW wind farm located on Colorado’s Front Range. Your land has a fantastic cliff/ridgeline with an elevation difference of 250 m. Evaluate whether or not you can make money by building a pumped hydroelectric energy storage system on your land that interfaces with the wind farm. Your plan is to capture excess energy from the wind farm or buy energy from the wind farm when electricity prices are low and sell...

1. You are to do a preliminary design study for a small demonstration steam turbine power plant. - Steam will be provided by a small steam generator fired by natural gas.   - Your system will take in steam at 30 bar and 400 oC. - The steam passes through a two stage turbine. At a pressure of 10 bars, the steam leaves the first stage of the turbine and will pass through a reheat loop in the steam generator which...
