Subject: Introductory Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics
Question:
Chlorine can kill harmful microbes and is mostly used as a disinfectant in various chemical processes such as water treatment plants. A process contains 17.5 g of Cl2which has a volume of 0.8 dm3 at 0 °C. For the given process, do the following calculations, give reference of the used data, and provide a logical explanation where applicable:
a) Calculate pressure by using the ideal gas equation.
b) Calculate ‘attractive force correction factor (a)’ in Van der Waals Equation of State using correct SI units.
c) Calculate‘molecularvolumecorrectionfactor(b)’inVanderWaalsEquation of State using correct SI units.
d) Calculate pressure by using Van der Waals Equation of State.
e) Compare pressure predicted by the ideal gas equation, and Van der Waals Equation of state using relative error method.
