The uncontrolled emission rate of SO2 from a power plant is 80 kg/ton and the controlled emission rate is 5 kg/ton.What is collection efficiency.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Collection efficiency is the measure of the overall performance of the air cleaning device. It refers to the percentage of emissions entering the air control equipment that are collected by the equipment and are thus removed from the exhaust stream.

Collection efficiency is given as the weight of material collected to total weight of input given to the collector.

As given in the question, the uncontrolled emission rate of SO2 is 80 kg/ton and the controlled rate is 5 kg/ton. This means the collector has removed (80-5) kg/ton = 75 kg SO2/ton of air for 80kg SO2/ton of air supplied to collector.

Collector efficiency = (weight of SO2 removed)/ (weight of SO2 in air entering the collector) X 100

= 75/80 X 100 = 93.75 %

A municipal solid waste incinerator has an emission factor of 20 lbs PM/ton of waste. Assume that the maximum two-hour permissible emission level is 0.18 g/m3 . If 80 dry standard cubic feet of flue gas are produced per pound of waste combusted, determine the control equipment collection efficiency needed to meet the emission limit. 1 ton = 2000 lb. 1 lb = 454 g. 1 ft 3 =28.3 L. PM = particulate matter.
