Explain why one molecular weight average is not sufficient in describing the chain length of a polymer.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer:

  • While describing the chain length of polymer different properties of the polymer hase to be analysed.
  • Some of the properties are depend solely on Number of molecule present in polymer Such as Boiling point elevation , Vapor pressure demotion, melting point demotion etc. These properties called as colligative properties.
  • For that Number average Molecular weight is Used. it is based only on number of molecule. it is not consider size or shape or weight of molecule.
  • Some other properties like strength of polymer , Stiffness etc. is depend on weight of Molecule. For that kind of properties Weight average molecular weight is Calculated.
  • Properties of polymer related to viscosity like resistance to flow is analysed by viscosity average molecular weight.

From above reason we can say that Different Average molecular weight is required.

The glass transition temperature of a linear polymer with number average molecular weight MN =2300 was measured at 120°C. This increased to 155°C for the same linear polymer with MN =9000. A branched version of this polymer with MN =7200 was found to have a Tg=105°C. Calculate the average number of branches per molecule in this branched polymer.
