3.It is a general observation that most attempts to blend polymers together results in phase separation. Explain why this is the case.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The phase seperation while blending occurs because of the non-compatibility of the polymers with each other. When two polymers are mixed togather they usually seperate because of the slight repulsive interaction existing between monomers of individual polymers. The phase seperation also occurs because of very small interaction between the monomers of the polymers, even though the monomer-monomer interaction is very small with each other it is related to the fact that polymer chain consists of a very large number of monomer units. Inspite of the monomer-monomer interaction is small in the polymer blend, the interchain interaction can be large which leads to phase separation.

Consider the general form of the utility for goods that are perfect complements. a) Why won’t our equations for finding an interior solution to the consumer’s problem work for this kind of utility? Draw(but do not submit) a picture and explain why (4, 16) is the utility maximizing point if the utility is U(x, y) = min(2x, y/2), the income is $52, the price of x is $5 and the price of y is $2.
