Predict the diffusivity of bovine serum albumin at 298 K in water as a dilute solution using the modified Polson equation and compare with the experimental value in Table 6.4-1. water viscosity at 298 K is 0.8937 x 10-3 Pa s

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Molecular weight of bovine serum albumin From table,

Ma = 67500 kg/kgmol

Viscosity of water at 298K, mu = 0.8937*10^-3 Pa.s

Temperature T = 298 K

Diffusivity of dilute solution of bovine serum in water

Modified polson equation for for finding diffusivity,

Dab =( 9.4*10^-15)T/[mu*(Ma) ^(1/3)]

Dab = (9.4*10^-15)*298/[(0.8937*10^-3)(67500)^1/3]

Dab = 7.698*10^-11 m2/s

ans : 7.698*10^-11 m2/s

By using table, experimental diffusivity Dabexp= 6.81*10^-11 m2/s

Comparison between calculated diffusivity and experimental diffusivity,

= (Dab - Dabexp)*100 /Dab =( 7.698 - 6.81)*10^-11]*100/7.698*10^-11 = 11.53%

Hence calculated diffusivity by polson equation is 11.53% higher than experimental diffusivity.
