Dangerous materials are characterized and controlled in the United States principally by-laws and guidelines managed by the U.S. environment Protection Agency (EPA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Everyone has its own meaning of a "hazardous material."

Hazardous material definition by DOT :

As per DOT hazardous materials are items or articles or substances that are equipped for representing a noteworthy hazard to wellbeing, security or property when moved via air, rail, ground, or ocean.
