Question

Name 2 ways differential pressure could be decreased in a distillation column.

Name 2 ways differential pressure could be decreased in a distillation column.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Differential pressure is the difference between the top pressure and bottom pressure of the coloumn. In a distillation coloumn pressure drop is occuring due to the following

  • Due to flow of vapour through the holes of the tray.
  • Due to liquid hold up in the tray.

Differential pressure could be decreased by following ways,

  1. By controlling the feed vapour, we can maintain the differential pressure. Differential pressure decreases with the decrease in rate of feed vapour flowing up and vice versa. Overloading of the feed might increase the differential pressure.
  2. Decrease in condenser efficiency, leading to the pressure increase in condenser, thereby causing a decrease in the flow of vapour from the coloumn top to condenser.

The feed stream to a distillation column is 40 mol-% n-pentane and 60 mol% n-hexane. Feed flow rate is 2500 mol/h and feed temperature is 30 °C. The column operates at 1 atm pressure and uses a total condenser. A distillate with 97 mol-% n-pentane is desired. Bottoms from the column should contain 98 mol-% n-hexane. Q1) Methanol (50 %) and water (50 %) mixture is fed into a distillation column. The feed flowrate is 500 kmole/hr. 50 % of feed is vaporized. The column is well insulated and has a total condenser. A reflux is set to 2 and returned to column as saturated liquid. The compositions in the distillate and bottom are to be 95 % and 5 %, respectively. The column is at 1 atm. Instead of a reboiler, saturated steam is directly...

An old oil refinery is to be upgraded. Currently the vacuum distillation column “bottoms” (vacuum residual) are sold as heavy fuel oil. A catalytic cracker is tobe installed to process the vacuum residual and extract more “white products” such as gasoline and kerosene. Steam is to be used to heat the vacuum residual from 120 C to 190 C using a shell and tube heat exchanger prior to feeding the residual to the proposed catalytic cracker. The vacuum residual has a...
