Solute will move from higher concentration to lower concentration when the barrier from two compartment is removed. The amount of solute moves from higher concentration to lower concentration per unit area per unit time due to concentration gradient is called diffusion flux.

First law deals for steady state diffusion, where diffusion flux is independent of time

Second law is deployed when concentration gradients varies with time, I.e for diffusion flux is dependent upon time. I.e for non steady diffusion flux
