The Zik-Zak Corporation recently bought a heat exchanger to cool 1000 lb/h of a light oil (Cp = 0.5 Btu/lbm?F°) from 210°F to 60°F using chilled water (Cp = 1 Btu/lbm?F°) available at 50°F. The exchanger operates in countercurrent flow and has an area A0= 20 ft2. When it was new, the exchanger could operate with a water rate such that the exit temperature of the water was 80°F; after several months of operation, the water exit temperature has to be lowered to 55°F to obtain the required heat transfer rate.

               a.            What is the heat transfer rate in the exchanger?

               b.           What was U0 for the new exchanger?

c.            What was the fouling coefficient after several months of operation?

heat transfer problem A counterflow concentric tube heat exchanger is used to cool lubricant oil of a big gas turbine. The cooling water's flow rate through the interior aluminum tube (Di= 25mm) is 0.2kg/seg, while the oil's flow rate through the exterior ring (Do= 45mm) is 0.1kg/seg. The oil and the water enter at 100°C and 30°C respectively. How long does the tube have to be for oil to leave at 60°C? Oil at 80°C Cp = 2131 J/Kg K...

Problem 8.24 Water is used to cool ethylene glycol in a 60-ft-long double pipe heat exchanger made of 4-std and 2-std (both type M) copper tubing. The water inlet temperature is 60°F and the ethylene glycol inlet temperature is 180°F. The flow rate of the ethylene glycol is 20 lbm/s, while that for the water is 30 lbm/s. Calculate the expected outlet temperature of the ethylene glycol and determine the pressure drop expected for both streams. Assume counterflow, and place...

Hot water enters a counter-flow double-pipe heat exchanger at 180F with a velocity of 5 ft/s. Cold water at 80F flows at 3 ft/s in the outer section of the exchanger. The diameter of the inner pipe is 1 inch, the pipe wall thickness is 1/8", and the outer pipe diameter is 2 inches. The overall heat transfer coefficient times area per unit length UA/L = 150 Btu/hr-ft-F. If the exchanger is 16 feet long, what is the exit temperature...

Atmosphric air at 40 F and 50% relative humidity enters the heating section of an airconditioning device at a volumetric flow rate of 100ft^3/min. Water vapor is added to the heated air to increase the relative humidity to 55%. The temperature after the heating section is 72F and the temperature at the exit is 74F. Using the appropriate fomulas: a) determine the rate of the heat transfer in Btu/min. b) determine the mass flow of water vapor in lbm/min.
