A highway has a traffic flow of 15,000 vehicles per hour emitting an average of 2 g/mile of NOx. If the wind speed is 1.5 m/s, calculate the NOx concentration 100 m downwind from the highway under moderately unstable conditions.

Answer #1

Though we can use any model to solve this kind of question so basocally we will use the emission factor model.

In the emission factor model, where detailed information is not required. The NOx concentration for 100 m is estimated using the equation as,

EF be the amount of NOx concentration over a distance

A be the activity rate that is the traffic flow

E be amount of pollutant per metre

from above formula, Traffic flow i.e, Activity (A) = 4.16 Vehicles/sec ,

Average emission (E) = 2 g of NOx/mile = 0.01242 gram of NOx/meter of road

Wind velocity = 1.5 m/s

Emission factor by above formula = 0.03446 gram of NOx/ meter of road

For the 100 m downwind from highway, it will be

A data set of traffic stream characteristics, such as space mean speed (u: miles per hour), density (k: vehicles per mile) and traffic flow rate (q: vehicles per hour), was collected for a freeway lane. The data reveals a relationship between flow rate (q) and density (k) as calibrated below: q=66*(k-k^2/160) Where, q = flow rate of the lane (vehicles per hour); k = density of the lane (vehicles per mile).
