Say you are given a process with 3 different sequential tasks, with average times as follows task 1 = 3.0 min, task 2= 2.5 min, and task 3= 1.2 min. Given Tr=0, and 400 units must be produced in a 10 hour shift answer the following:

a) What is the line balance (min/unit) Tc = Ts?

b) What is the balance efficiency (%) of the line?

please show math

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) Line balancing is done by identifying and adding the minimum number of resources required to meet the desired production rate

In this case, the total duration of tasks = 3+2.5+1.2 =6.7 min

the cycle time to meet 400 units in 10 hour = 10*60/400 = 1.5 min

Additional resource required = 6.7/1.5 =4.47 = 5 Resources

Refer the attached image for task wise work out of line balancing

Now that we know how many resources are required, we can calculate the balance efficiency

Balance Efficiency = Total work content time / Total Available time.

in the above work out,

Total Work content time = 400 *6.7 = 2680 min

Total Available time = 5*10*60 = 3000 min ( 5 resources working at 10 hrs per shift)

Balance Efficiency = 2680/3000 = 0.89
