Murphy meant that both leader and followers have great influence on each other as effective leadership is a result of complex sets of interaction between leaders and their followers and also the situation has great influence on it. The leader and followers relationship changes with situation and there are many other factors like environment and context which affects the whole process. In my opinion Murphy wanted to highlight the importance of followers while shaping leaders and approach of a leader to interacting, influencing and getting influenced with their followers when he suggested that leadership is an interactive and dynamic process.
