There are laws as stated by the government in the title 7 of the civil rights act of 1964. This states that in no way is a business allowed to discriminate on the basis of religion even based on their standing, size or influence. The churches are however exempt from this rule due to an exception where they are not considered a secular employer. But, unless Christian science monitor newspaper is not associated with the value of a church, it is legal for them to discriminate on the basis of religion.
