I don’t think that it is the ultimate desertion of a project manager to let go the member if the positive results are not seen after the discussion. As, it’s the results which matter for a project manager. Though, I firmly believe that each team member should be given proper time to prove his or her worth. But, if a project member is not providing positive results, the project manager has to let him or her go and try to find someone else who are capable enough to deliver positive results.
