Answer #1

In most hotel the key system nowadays is the card system. You are provided with a magnetic strip card (similar to credit/debit card) and you use it to unlock your door at the hotel.

The keys/cards are imprinted during check-in by the receptionist. It contains a numerical value that is accepted only by the lock at the given room number. This number is stored in the card’s magnetic strip and can be programmed to remain there for specific duration. For example, if a guest is scheduled to stay for 7 days, then the card can be programmed to hold the number for 7 days.

There are several benefits of using a key system/card system.

  • The locks and keys are programmable. Hence the risk of losing keys is minimized.
  • The entry/exit to the room can be monitored electronically in case of any requirement.
  • Easy to create a master key that works with all the rooms and also makes the administration of hotel easier.
  • The cards are lightweight and easy to carry.
  • In case of loss/theft of cards, the lock and key can be easily reprogrammed

However, there are some challenges as well with these systems

  • These systems are electronic in nature and pose certain security concern
  • Magnetic strip readers can easily read and create duplicate keys
  • There is a possibility of the key getting damaged due to electro-magnetic interference from other electronics
