A study was conducted on the relationship between the speed of different cars and their gas mileage. The correlation coefficient was found to be 0.35. Later, it was discovered that there was a defect in the speedometers, and they had all been set 5 miles per hour too fast. The correlation coefficient was computed using the corrected scores. Its new value will be:

A) -0.35
B) 0.40
C) 0.35
D) 0.30

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Earlier correlation coefficient =0.35

New correlation coefficient= 0.35

There will not be any change in the correlation coefficient this is because it is the property of the correlation coefficients that it is unitless. It means whatever you do with the data but correlation coefficient will not change and remain the same.

You can take an example. Make a 2 table and fill 5 data in each and then calculate the correlation coefficient now after calculations add any number let us say 5 with second list and then calculate correlation coefficient between the new table and old table. You will see that the value remains the same.

So option C is correct

Some people believe that higher-octane fuels result in better gas mileage for their car. To test this claim, a researcher randomly selected 11 individuals to participate in the study. Each participant received 10 gallons of gas and drove his car on a closed course. The number of miles driven until the car ran out of gas was recorded. A coin flip was used to determine whether the car was filled up with 87-octane or 92-octane first, and the driver did...

Mr. Smith conducted a nonexperimental study at his school examining the relationship between teachers' classroom behavior practices and their students' achievement. He used a frequently-used, well-validated, Likert-type survey instrument to measure teachers' classroom behavior practices and a well-validated and reliable achievement test as an indicator of their students' academic success. His analysis found a significant negative relationship between teachers' use of negative reinforcement and students' scores on the achievement test. He concluded that negative reinforcement resulted in lower achievement. Which...

9. A lot of corn grows in Iowa. For several years, farmers have kept track of the amount of rainfall (in inches) and the amount of corn produced (in bushels per acre). A strong and linear relationship has been observed between these variables. When a regression equation is constructed in order to predict amount of corn produced based on rainfall, it is found that the equation has an intercept of 89.54 and a slope of 0.13. We can conclude from...

Instructions: In 1974, Loftus and Palmer conducted a classic study demonstrating how the language used to ask a question can influence eyewitness memory. In the study, college students watched a film of an automobile accident and then were asked questions about what they saw. One group was asked, “About how fast were the cars going when they smashed into each other?” Another group was asked the same question except the verb was changed to “hit” instead of “smashed into.” The...
