With globalisation of the economic environment employee retention and attraction of the best available talent within any industry is a major factor greatly impacting the performance and success of an organisation given the fact that human resource is a major input for most organisations. The quality of Manpower recruited by an organisation greatly decides the subsequent quality of output delivered. Since most organisations are aware of the extensive impact of hiring and retaining the best available talent, they indulge in constantly evolving strategies and tools to achieve this goal in a greatly competitive economic environment. Most strategies formulated with the aim of achieving this goal focus on compensation policies which need to be implemented along with all benefits and perks which need to be offered to ensure retention along with job satisfaction and motivation for the employees. Employment of a diverse workforce largely made possible by great advancement in technology leading to recruitment process crossing all national and international borders and going global.
With most organisations dependent upon information technology as a major product or service requiring to recruit a young work force with expertise in the latest technology along with having exceptional creative and innovative skills, the tendency attract and retain freshers by providing an opportunity to fresh employees taking up the first job is explode as an important means of availing Employees with the latest technical skills and unexploited talent. The problem however occurs with a major mismatch in expectations of first timers having an exceptionally utopian view of work environment and job requirements which may be distinctly different from what the actually get in real life. Due to the expectations being unrealistic it results in an imbalance in expectations and what is received leading to high level of dissatisfaction leading to high attrition rate with new recruits constantly switching jobs with the aim of finding the perfect dream job they have always envisioned.
The first timers are used to communication and behaviour which is mostly informal and may not be accustomed to communicating controlled manner in alignment with the required organisational culture and environment especially with extremely hierarchical organisation requiring communication to be deferential. It requires adaptation to completely different environment where focuses on the work at hand with first time employees being much more self centred and looking at receiving importance and attention and even go to extremes of behaviour attracting attention through the mode of communication or dress sense. Another major issue which arises from the most self absorbed behaviour of many first time employees is there in ability to operate within groups due to constant requirement for receiving praise and appreciation for their personal work inputs. There is an extreme possessiveness new employees regarding their work and output and a greater sense of pride and achievement at what they have produced in the very beginning of the professional lives similar to that failed by a child learning to speak or do things on their own. This makes it difficult first and employees to operate as a team within a group where the output of the team as a whole is more relevant than an individual and may lead to the satisfaction among the employees of their creativity equality of work not being appreciated adequately. It takes time for them to understand that achievement of goals is important whether it is together with the team or individually. That personal satisfaction needs to be derived from giving the best and performing at optimal levels which quality output and the rewards for constant performance come with being loyal to an organisation and continuing to do one's best under all conditions and circumstances.
