Answer #1

Job evaluation process is usually done by way of Performance Management System (PMS) in most organizations. The process is deemed credible if due process is followed without any bias and favoritism.

In the evaluation process, employees are given annual goals to be achieved in their respective work profiles and the same are evaluated quarterly/bi-annually/annually as per company policy. To be credible, goals need to be achievable, practical and should be agreed upon mutually by both the employee and the supervisor.

Achievement of goals need to be linked to salary and perk enhancement in a fair manner. During periodic evaluation, proper discussion should be held in the manner of guidance and not criticism. The supervisor should guide and advise the subordinate employee on course correction in case the path to achieving goals are not in the right direction. Similarly, the employee should also take the inputs by way of suggestion, advise and guidance and not treat the same as negative inputs.

Once the periodic evaluation process is completed and final evaluation is done on which salary increments depend, the process needs to be undertaken in a cordial manner which takes into account both the supervisor and subordinate view points. Normally, there is a neutral facilitator who sits through the proceedings to ensure there are no acrimonious exchanges and the evaluation is completed smoothly.

The gradings the subordinate employee receives after evaluation should be a fair conclusion and agreed by both the supervisor and employee.

In conclusion therefore it can be said that job evaluation is an effective process that fairly compensates employees when the due process is followed in a fair and mutually acceptable manner.
