Health Information Exchange (HIE) is the electronic transfer of patient related health information among various healthcare providers. Especially in health informatics, it helps in restructuring the healthcare program and also to facilitate information sharing among healthcare providers which potentially improves patient care, quality of services, safety, etc. It also helps in meaningful usage and sending point-to-point information to known recipients. Overall, HIE helps in IT adoption and assimilation, to use patient related information to the fullest, support any kind of changes in the insurance coverage, helps in identify ill person with accurate immunization histories, which help healthcare professionals, policy makers, industries, etc. In many countries, it helps in public health improvements and help federal government to encourage healthcare activities.
