Explain the benefits and weaknesses of the “Matrix” design of organizations (from Chapter 11).

Benefits:

> In such a structure, it is easy to handle projects which requires resources from various functions. Projects can be sucessfully implemented with out disturbing the structure of the organiztion.

> Limited human resources can be efficiently used

> Flow of information among various functions and team members in a project is very quick and good

> Once a project is completed, the team members can quickly resume their duties in their functional departments.

Weaknesses:

> There is multiple reporting in this structure. Employees might receive directions from multiple bosses and this would lead to confusion

> This strucutre is complex to understand and makes organizational working complex

> Management overhead costs are higher

> Conflicts can arise
