Development of Version 2.0 of a particular accounting software product is being considered by Jose Noguera's technology firm in Baton Rouge. The activities necessary for the completion of this project are listed in the following table:

Activity Normal Time (weeks) Crash Time (weeks) Normal Cost Total Cost with Crashing Immediate Predecessors(s)
A 4 3 $2,200 $2,850 ---
B 2 1 $2,100 $2,700 ---
C 3 3 $750 $750 ---
D 8 4 $2,500 $2,800 A
E 6 3 $800 $1,250 B
F 3 2 $3,200 $4,400 C
G 4 2 $1,400 $1,800 D, E

a) Based on the given information regarding the activities for the project, the project length = _______ weeks ?

b) The total cost required for completing this project on normal time = _______ ?

c) If you wish to reduce the time required to complete this project by 1 week, which activity should be crashed, and how much will this increase the total cost?

The critical path with the longest length through the project is  _______ ?

Answer #1

Path and Duration are:

ADG = 16

BEG = 12

CF = 6

a) Project length = 16 weeks

b) Total cost = 200+2100+750+2500+800+3200+1400 = 12,950 $

c) To reduce project length by 1 week, need to reduce from path ADG.

Cost of crashing per week = (Crash cost-Normal cost)/(Normal time-Crash time)

Crashing cost of A = (2850-2200)/(4-3) = 650

Crashing cost of D = (2800-2500)/(8-4) = 75

Crashing cost of G = (1800-1400)/(4-2) = 200

So, Crash D by 1 week with increase in cost by 75$ in the Total cost of 12950$

The critical path with longest length is ADG
