Planner Pet Peeves:

The book Planner Pet Peeves written by Shawna Suckow discusses how planners really think, act and buy.

The three themes, which I found interesting area s follows:

  1. Networking and building relations: It is critical for a planner to have a one on one communication and build relations with a human and personal touch. I think it is critical to developing a good public relations and a network, which can support and promote your business by directly targeting social media forums like LinkedIn, Twitter where your target customers are available. Joining the groups and getting on one on one discussion, sharing of ideas will generate more business contacts, create a network of target clientele, and help in generating more ideas. The free exchange of views and brainstorming on many issues create an affinity and bonding. Your target customers will be attracted to work with people from the group, as the bonding already exists.
  1. The need to Improving channels of communication and transparency between supplier and planners. It is critical as emphasized in the book that some suppliers try to short-circuit the planner. They overcharge and sometimes misquote. The supplier, planner equation is lacking trust and mutual belief. I think it is critical for any successful relationship to have open channels of communication and be transparent in the business transactions. This is interesting because the real side of human nature, which includes a lot of mistrust and miscommunication, is highlighted in the book.
  1. The Supplier should be honest and straightforward with the Planner: The book again highlights the need for the supplier to give adequate information and briefing to the planner. The planner should not be given incorrect information and the supplier should make a tailor-made proposal for the planner according to the requirement indicated. This is also interesting as the theme indicates the need for accurate planning which starts with supplier giving perfect and accurate information to the planner. This indicates need to increase the seriousness while giving proposal and quotes to the planner. This also highlights the need for coordination between different businesses to satisfy their end customer by having a close coordination and synchronizing of activities.
