Silk Road began in the 2000 BC joining Eastern Europe to china which in general is referred to as Silk Road from China to Mediterranean. The Silk Road was an important trade route; it was not only used for trading silk but also spices, technology, rare animals, leather goods etc. From west rare animals, leather goods, technology was traded while from east tea, porcelain and silk was traded. This trade helped in enriching lives of people living in the two continents.

Following are some of the points to understand importance of silk route:

  1. It reduced the journey time between china and Mediterranean. Navigation was done by using streams, river and stars
  2. It helped in collecting tax from the travelers. States enticed travelers to come and visit them by providing them with low taxes, shelter etc. It was believed travelers brings wealth to the states
  3. The trade route was not only used for products but also used for transmission of idea, beliefs etc.
  4. This route was used by travelers so much that overtime tourism developed along the route
  5. Tourism and trade helped in growth of Chinese Economy as it helped in globalization of China
  6. It led to exchange of cultures and religion
